Towards a New Novel

David Shields recently dismissed most contemporary novels as "antediluvian texts" that "could have been written by Flaubert 150 years ago". "In no way," claimed the author of Reality Hunger, "do they convey what it feels like to live in the 21st century..."

  1. We don't need to know what it feels to live like in the 21st century; we live in it! What a git.

(Incidentally, I love Flaubert, and think if more people wrote like that today then I would read more modern books!)

  3. I would argue that there are, in fact, too many books that tell us 'what it feels like to live in the 21st century' *yawns*. And this is why we have to look to the literature of the past; because present-day literature is - generally-speaking - as drab, colourless and uninspired as the times it encapsulates.

  4. What, 'git'? Possibly the mildest term of mild abuse ever to saunter innocently into a comments box?

I agree, Steve. Can't think of anything more depressing than reading 'gritty' lit fic, which I suspect is what Mr G refers to. Yawn indeed.

  6. I am giggling, but yes, don't like it. I've just seen so much of the swearing and rude words in Autho, that I want this place to be as pleasant as possible. I know it's mild, but where does one draw the line. Let that one go and the next person says, but miss, you let Alexandra say.... You know what it's like. Not getting at you, because we all know you're a lovely girl. xxx
